I am a little hazy whether it was at Ramillies or St. Omer. I expect Guard Picket was the same for most first timers. We were issued with an axe handle and flashlight. Part of the patrol area incorporated inspection of the transport sheds.
Instructed to ensure they were secure from intruders, we innocently trod where no Angel dared to go after dark and ventured inside.
Every corner of the sheds were occupied and possibly the vehicles as well. Flashing a beam of light around and noticing the chevrons displayed on the arms of shadowy forms busily engaged in vowing their undying love between gasps from their female accomplices, We hastily beat a strategic withdrawal to the sound of outraged bellows of the finest full blooded Parade Ground abuse and threats being uttered of the fate that would befall us if we came back ringing in our ears.
We never did.
