My name is Rob Oliver ( cookie), I joined the infantry as a boy solider in 1976, the Devon and Dorset reg, Prince of Wales divi, Abbergavenni south wales. After basic training and walking everywhere I decided to change my career.
So in early 79 I joined the ACC, when to alderstoot, had a great time 6 weeks basic and 3months in the tower, I don't remember much about my time there but I was voted best recruit by my platoon. my best mate there was Pat Collins from Chadderton Oldham.We lost touch years ago.
In September 79 I was posted out to 16 AD reg RA in Kirton Lindsey, A month later went to Northern Ireland for 6 months, Armagh City. dodging snippers running from the barracks to the cookhouse. I still have the picture we purchased with the tips we made in ireland (Ulster Impression).
16 AD got posted to Germany about 1980? and I stayed with 12 AD reg RA, We were forever on exercise in Germany, UK, Back in kirton we had a great team played hard and worked hard, I drove a red Capri with general lee( dukes of hazard) stripes down the side, Some of the guys , Taffy Evens, Chris Harvey,Dave Meed,Joe Rollingson,The George, The first and last , oak, best pubs in kirton.
April 82 The Falklands.
I went down there with two other chefs Andy Grimmes and Wilf
? we stayed for 5 month moved all over the islands with the regiment HQ and in small detachments of rapier platoons. We came back on the Norland to Assension and flew to Brize norton.
We got back in October 82, I messed up and lost my wife because of the Falkland's and the army in there wisdom posted me to the
2 Royal Anglians, A very young regiment which had just come back from a 2 yrs northern ireland tour and had a keen CO who put them straight in for 6 month tour in Cyprus, went in November 83, I did 4 months and then left the Army in the April of 84. I settled in SC**thorpe and married again.
