The process of calling out an NCO was well known.
Someone actually having the gall to go for it, Unheard of.
It happened in our hut over a discourse between a rookie and the squad corporal. A challenge was made. The NCO took up the challenge. A bout was arranged for the next afternoon behind the hut. We were ordered to attend. Both men stripped to the waist, boxing gloves were donned. The CO Refereed. The fighters were told to go to their corner and come out fighting.
I was batting for the hut member, yet within me this odd feeling of remorse was creeping over me. Somehow it didn't feel right to allow "our" NCO get beaten by an upstart and lose face. Hell, we all had a sneaking regard these men, even though they got under our skin  but deep down, if the push came to a shove, right  to the last man we would have sprung to their defence, although not one of us would have ever openly admitted to it.
No need to have worried though, each scored around three blows the CO stepped in, stopped the fight, held an arm up of each fighter and declared a draw. Honor had been served and they shook hands
