Some will be familiar with the site of the War Memorial alongside the Suez Canal. Immediately across from the Memorial stood Gebel Maryam, the RASC/ACC encampment. During one of the times I was there, a rather unusual event took place.
About eleven a.m. one morning, we were all told to go back to our tents and remain there. The air was electrifying as we waited to find out what was going on. We didn't have to wait long, Four Military Police arrived in a Landie  and drove into the RASC lines pulling up outside a tent. About fifteen minutes later it took off again with a passenger and a package. It transpired the lad who had been carted off wasn't exactly the sharpest knife in the box and had a history of burglarizing in Civvy Street. He was either feeling a bit rusty and trying to keep his hand in or had succumbed to temptation. Anyway, he  decided to break and enter a shop in Moasca in Ismailia. after it had closed for the night.  We never found out what he received by way of a sentence but if it was up to me, he would have been awarded  a medal for giving the Gypos a taste of what they had stolen from the Brits camps over the years.
